Opisthobranch of the Week Data
Taxonomy:
As of the current date I've not personally seen specimens of the above unknown Cerberilla sp. 2 here in the waters of Okinawa's main island. Atsushi Ono kindly furnished the image and data for the above featured animal and he considers the species to be very rare in waters of the Keramas * and reports (pers. comm.) seeing only a single individual. Atsushi collected the animal from an area of a shallow coral reef facing the open sea.
Previously the above animal was featured on these pages as an unknown glaucid (Glaucid sp. 6); Richard Willan promptly pointed out the long oral tentacles, strongly tentaculate propodial margin, elongate rhinophores close together and well back on the head, and in addition, the fusiform cerata in oblique rows strongly suggest that it is a Cerberilla sp. I've now updated the related pages to reflect the more accurate taxonomic placement of the animal.
Cerberilla sp. 2 is one of several described and undescribed Cerberilla species known from Okinawan waters; previously I've featured on these pages the following species of Cerberilla:
