Aerial Photograph of Tengan Pier, Okinawa
(Photo taken from the Okinawa Prefecture's Home Page)
There are typically two access routes to get to the Tengan Pier dive area:
- The "Gravel Pit Entry". A 4-wheel drive down a steep dirt road to the water's edge.
- The "Beach Entry". A 4-wheel drive traverse across a sandy beach.
From either of the two entry points I usually snorkel on the surface to the dog leg portion of the pier, as indicated by the dashed red lines, then down on air to depth (20~45ft) and follow the entire pier up one side and down the other, and back to the original entry point for the exit.
Note: Water depth off the end of the pier during high spring tide conditions is approximately 45ft. The huge numerous pilings supporting the pier are covered with a huge variety of encrusting marine life, including bryozoans, cnidarians, poriferans, pelecypods, and urochordates. The silty sand bottom of the entire area frequently provides poor underwater visibility.
- Tengan Pier Location & Coordinates: 14km W Ikei-shima (Ikei Island), Okinawa (26o24.0'N, 127o51.1'E)
Also see an additional photograph of the pier as well as a historical description.
