Carolus Linnaeus (Carl von Linne' / 1707-1778)

The eighteenth century Swedish botanist, physician and naturalist who developed the system of binomial nomenclature for naming species of organisms. He also established the major categories that are used in the hierarchical system of biological classification.

A noteworthy web site for additional information concerning Linnaeus is at the University of California's Berkeley Museum of Paleontology, which has an excellent presentation of Linnaeus' Bibliography.
